Start a New Page in your Notebook titled - The Parts of an Evidence-Based Claim (EBC)

What is an EBC?
It is a topic sentence that you make up based on evidence from a text.  Sort of a logical conclusion you make up based on something you read, listened to, or viewed.

How do you create your own EBC or Topic Sentence?

1.  Think About Your Evidence
Think about the text and come up with two or three pieces of evidence that have a common thread or idea.  In this case, I'm thinking about Laurie's parents not noticing he was a problem child for a couple reasons.

Examples
a.  Laurie's behavior at home was bad (dragged wagon through the house and called father names and used incorrect grammar)
b.  Laurie told his parents all the bad things Charles did but they never investigated further even though they thought Charles might be a bad influence.

2.  How Does the Evidence Connect?

Example:  Thinking about the evidence above, the common thread that links them together is that Laurie showed his bad behavior all along and his parents didn't notice.

3.  State your claim clearly - this is your EBC (Evidence-based Claim)
Example:  In the short story, Charles, by Shirley Jackson, Laurie's parents should have figured out that Laurie was lying about Charles.

Evidence-based Claim Essay

In the short story, Charles by Shirley Jackson, Laurie'sparents should have figured out that Laurie was lying about Charles.  This is because Laurie is a naughty child who says and does bad things.  For example, when Laurie came home the first day of school for lunch, "...he knocked over his little sister’s milk."  Then he used bad grammar.  His mother said, “How was school today? Did you learn anything?’’  Laurie said, “I didn’t learn nothing." He even called his father, "...an ol'dust mop." But the most telling sign that he was lying about Charles is when he came home late from school.  When his parents asked why he had to stay after school he said, “Charles yelled so much that the teacher came in from first grade. She said our teacher had to keep Charles quiet. And so Charles had to stay after school. And so all the children stayed to watch him.”  This doesn't make any sense.  Why would a teacher make the whole class stay after and watch one child who was bad?  If Laurie's parents had paid more attention, they would have figured out that Laurie was lying.  These examples prove that Laurie is a naughty child and could easily make up a lie like Charles so he wouldn't get in trouble.  Laurie's parents should have figured out he was lying way before they found out from Laurie's teacher at the PTA meeting.
