Entry Title: Color Code a  TREAT Paragraph

Copy the student-generated paragraph below into a page in your notebook and then color code the parts of TREAT using the key.

      The Burial at Thebes

In The Burial At Thebes, a play by Sophocles, Antigone is incredibly foolish and defiant when speaking to King Creon.  This is because she strong and independent woman. First, she tells him, “This death penalty is almost a relief.” Her statement feels like an insult to Creon and so he tells her he is glad, for she is going to die.  Second, she goes on to tell him he is being reckless.  This second comment is even more of an insult and foolish because it sounds like a criminal passing judgment on a king.  This makes Creon feel that his punishment of Antigone is justified, because she not only welcomes her punishment, but also has the nerve to judge a law-abiding man like the king.  Her final foolish act to make matters even worse, Antigone, instead of explaining to Creon why she did what she did and why he should consider her perspective, argues with Creon about his law regarding the burial of traitors.  This proves she is foolish and defiant because had she remained calm and respectful instead of lashing out at Creon she might have avoided the death penalty by convincing Creon, or his respected advisers, that she did not deserve to be put to death for breaking the burial law.  However, by acting foolishly and defiantly, she essentially signed her own death warrant.
