Replicating, and thus collectively and publicly validating, the integrity of published work is often difficult and some still oppose the idea.

The broader scientific community is moving strongly in the direction of participating in, or requiring some form of, data sharing. Recipients of grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health now are required to make their data available to other scholars upon publication, or within a year of the end of their grant.

Substantial progress is being made in the area of validating and publishing scientific findings.

Notebook Title: Color Code a Short Story TEAL Paragraph
        • Copy the student-generated paragraph below into a page in your notebook and then color code the parts of TEAL using the key.  (You don't need to know the novel it's discussing, just consider what you know about the parts of TEAL).

In The Burial At Thebes, Antigone is incredibly foolish and defiant when speaking to King Creon.  First, she tells him, “This death penalty is almost a relief.” Her statement feels like an insult to Creon and so he tells her he is glad, for she is going to die.  Second, she goes on to tell him he is being reckless.  This second comment is even more of an insult because it sounds like a criminal passing judgment on a king.  This makes Creon feel that his punishment of Antigone is justified, because she not only welcomes her punishment, but also has the gall to judge a law-abiding man like the king.  To make matters worse Antigone, instead of explaining to Creon why she did what she did and why he should consider her perspective, argues with Creon about his law regarding the burial of traitors.  Had she remained calm and respectful instead of lashing out at Creon she could have avoided the death penalty by convincing Creon, or his respected advisers, that she did not deserve to be put to death for breaking the burial law.  However, by acting foolishly and defiantly, she essentially signed her own death warrant.
